Role & Responsibilities
A Personal Support Worker (PSW) plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by providing direct, hands-on care and daily support to patients, elderly individuals, and persons living with disabilities. This role is performed in hospitals, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, and home care environments, where the main focus is to improve the overall quality of life, comfort, and safety of patients.
The PSW works under the supervision of registered nurses, doctors, or healthcare supervisors and ensures that patients receive consistent, respectful, and compassionate care throughout their treatment or daily routine. The position requires strong empathy, patience, physical strength, and attention to detail.
📌 Key Responsibilities:
- Provide personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, grooming, dressing, oral care, and maintaining hygiene to ensure dignity and comfort.
- Assist with mobility support and safe patient handling, including transferring patients, helping them walk, and preventing fall-related risks.
- Support patients with feeding and nutrition assistance, ensuring they receive proper meals according to dietary instructions and medical needs.
- Observe and monitor patient conditions, including physical, emotional, and behavioral changes, and promptly report any concerns to nurses or doctors.
- Offer consistent emotional support and companionship, helping patients cope with stress, loneliness, or anxiety during treatment or recovery.
- Assist healthcare professionals in basic medical support tasks under supervision, following hospital protocols and safety guidelines strictly.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic environment, including sanitizing patient areas, changing linens, and ensuring infection control standards are followed.
- Support daily healthcare routines in hospitals or care homes, ensuring patients follow medication schedules, therapy routines, and care plans as directed.
- Ensure patient dignity, privacy, and respect are maintained at all times while delivering care services.
- Respond quickly and appropriately in case of patient emergencies and escalate issues to medical staff when required.
🎯 Work Expectations:
- Must be able to handle physically demanding caregiving tasks
- Should maintain high standards of hygiene and professionalism
- Must follow instructions from healthcare staff accurately
- Should demonstrate empathy, patience, and strong communication skills
- Ability to work in shift-based environments (day/night/rotational)
Requirements
- Applicants must have basic English communication skills, including the ability to understand instructions, communicate with patients, and coordinate effectively with nurses, doctors, and healthcare staff in daily work environments. Clear communication is essential for safe and effective patient care.
- Freshers are eligible to apply, provided they demonstrate a strong willingness to learn, adaptability, and a responsible attitude toward healthcare duties. Many employers may offer on-the-job training or orientation for selected candidates in Canada.
- Candidates must be physically fit and medically healthy, as the PSW role involves assisting patients with mobility, lifting support, long working hours, and other physically demanding healthcare responsibilities.
- A valid passport is mandatory for international employment processing, visa application, and overseas travel requirements. Applicants must ensure their passport is valid for the required duration.
- A Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate or relevant healthcare training is preferred and can significantly improve selection chances. However, in some cases, candidates without certification may still be considered depending on employer requirements.
- Applicants may be required to provide a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) to confirm a clean background record, ensuring safety and trust when working with vulnerable patients, elderly individuals, or disabled persons.
- Candidates should demonstrate strong personal qualities such as patience, empathy, emotional stability, and responsibility, which are essential for handling sensitive healthcare situations effectively.
- Willingness to work in shift-based schedules, including day, night, weekend, or rotational shifts, depending on hospital or facility requirements.
- Ability to follow strict healthcare protocols, hygiene standards, and safety guidelines while working in clinical or home care environments.
